Abstract
Summary: Heavily irradiated nondividing lymphoid cells from immune donor Lewis rats were capable of transferring DH to neutral recipients. Serial transfer of DH beyond a second passage failed and was only occasionally achieved in secondary recipients. Cells from immune donors could not be boosted by antigen or PPD to enhance serial transfer or the severity of DH. These results indicated that cellular proliferation was not a necessary part of the expression of DH. Lymphoid cells acquired immunologic competence to transfer DH only after continuous in vivo incubation with antigen and only after the donors exhibited positive skin reactions.
