Abstract
The polarized IR and Raman spectra of poly(ethylene sulfide) (PES) and poly(ethylene-d4 sulfide) (PES-d4) in the region of 4000–100 cm−1 were measured. The vibrational assignments were made on the basis of the normal coordinate treatments. In the IR spectrum of PES the “amorphous bands” were observed at 1270, 1015, and 840 cm−1. The intensity of these bands showed a linear relation to the density. The IR bands in the region of 800–600 cm−1, where the CH2 rocking and C—S stretching modes strongly couple to each other, were reasonably assigned from the band shifts on deuteration. Raman lines were clearly observed at 65 and 36 cm−1 for PES and at 61 and 34 cm−1 for PES-d4, possibly due to the lattice vibrations. Keywords
