Abstract
This chapter argues that the denial of multiculturalism in today's Western societies, far from keeping liberal ideas pure, leads to their degeneration into supermarket liberalism. First, it states briefly the liberal case for multiculturalism, and then deals with three objections. It offers some considerations that call on governments to take action beyond that required by policies of toleration and non-discrimination. The combined effect of such considerations and polices is that liberal multiculturalism leads not to the abandonment of a common culture, but to the emergence of a common culture which is respectful towards all the groups of the country, and hospitable to their prosperity. Keywords
