Standardization and Efficacy of Allergen Extracts

Abstract
The paper by Metzger et al. in this issue of the Journal is an excellent example of the continuing research aimed at improving the immunotherapy of allergic disorders and better understanding of the mechanisms whereby favorable clinical results occur. This work follows a series of efforts, dating from the 1930′s, to modify allergenic materials so that they may be administered more safely. More recently, these efforts have also been directed to preserving or enhancing the capacity of allergenic extracts to produce an IgG (blocking) antibody response, a measure of immunogenicity correlated with clinical efficacy.
