Preferred Disposition of Institutionalized Aged

Abstract
To identify supportive services that the aged need to remain in the community, protocols of 10 randomly selected clients on the waiting list to a sectarian home were submitted to 38 judges (board members and professionals) who were asked to consider alternative plans in arriving at recommendations to “Admit now,” “Defer admission,” or “Not admit.” For only two clients did 50% or more of the judges recommend to “Admit now.” The discrepancy between actual and preferred dispositions was associated with the absence of those supportive services that facilitate viable independent community living. Eight types of services were identified by judges that would be useful in various combinations for waiting list clients.
