Abstract
Axial-strain-induced birefringence between orthogonal polarizations of the same spatial mode in an optical fiber is derived by using a vector analysis of the wave equation. It is found that heretofore puzzling experimental observations can be theoretically explained when the small but finite z fields of the modes are taken into account. Keywords
