Abstract
The number of quadriplegics due to spinal cord injury is increasing each year. These patients need not remain in hospital beds. Most of them can become self-sufficient and live at home; many can become gainfully employed. The degree of function possible is dependent on the presence of certain key muscle groups. Wrist extensors are of major importance because prehension is then possible in an otherwise paralyzed hand. The use of orthotic devices to provide hand function and heavy resistance exercises to hypertrophy remaining musculature make the functional goals of these patients much higher than is generally recognized. Keywords
