Abstract
Using the standard autoclaving technic of Lactobacillus casei microbiologic assay for serum folate level, the inhibitory effect of different antibiotics on serum folate was determined. Blood for serum folate assay was obtained from adult human subjects before and 2 hr. after a 24-hr. test dose of the antibiotic. With the dose of antibiotics used in common practice, sulfisoxazole, erythromycin, lincomycin, and novobiocin were found to produce a false low serum folate level, whereas penicillin, ampicillin, chloramphenicol, sodium colistimethate, streptomycin, tetracycline, kanamycin, and nitrofurantoin had no inhibitory effect in the growth of L. casei. Keywords
