RESPIRATORY FUNCTION IN PULMONARY TUBERCULOSIS

Abstract
Repeated study of the physiologic status of 49 patients was undertaken to investigate respiratory function before and during treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis. In the untreated patients, there was a correlation between the extent of the disease and some of the measurements of lung volumes, the ventilatory function, and the oxygen-diffusing capacity. During treatment, all of these values returned toward normal, but this correlation was no longer present. Three cases have been described in detail to illustrate the variable structural changes persisting after treatment and to relate these to the physiologic findings.
