First aid: essential skills for nurses

Abstract
Walton defines first aid as 'the immediate care given to a person who has been injured or become suddenly ill before the arrival of medical personnel’ (1). Walton argues that the terms ‘first aid’ and ‘emergencies in nursing’ are synonymous, believing such situations may arise both inside and outside hospital, allowing the nurse to apply the same principles of care in both settings. This statement seems particularly relevant in the light of Project 2000 nurses training to practise in both hospital and community.
