Laser transformation hardening

Abstract
Laser transformation hardening of AISI 1045 steel is analyzed thermally for the case of a uniformly intense, rectangular shaped beam moving at a constant speed. Numerical analysis of the three‐dimensional heat conduction equation is accomplished in order to calculate temperature elevation, heating and cooling rates, and hardened case depth for a given beam size, power, and processing speed. Measurements of the magnitude and distribution of residual stress, strain‐life fatigue behavior, and wear rate of the laser processed steel are presented.
