Abstract
The effect of pairing correlations on the properties of excited nuclei having definite value of the projection of the total angular momentum along the quantization axis is considered utilizing the statistical mechanics of the BCS model of superconductivity. In the zero temperature limit fixing the angular momentum projection, one gets the blocking effect, that is, pair formation in the low lying states with specified angular momentum is greatly reduced as compared with the ground state. As the temperature increases, pair formation is recovered considerably. The transition energy below which the Fermi gas model is invalidated depends little on the angular momentum. Just below the transition temperature, Tc, the level density and its spin dependence is approximately evaluated. In this temperature range the moment of inertia along the quantization axis changes from the rigid body value quadratically in Tc-T.Keywords
