Abstract
The issues discussed in the following paper have been raised by a case study of the impact of industrialization on the peasant society of Northern Sweden during the latter part of the 19th century. * Local history research into these questions has been carried out by, among others, myself, Hans Freijd, Nils-Gustav Lundgren and Hans-Urban Strand (all in Umeå) and Rune Bunte (Lund) regarding the Umeå district, especially the parish of Degerfors, and by Ove Lund-berg (Umeå) in the Örnsköldsvik district. I am especially indebted to Hans-Urban Strand for his comments and contribution of empirical facts and knowledge. I am also indebted to Stephen Fisher (Exeter), Kenneth Lockridge (Ann Arbor) and Rolf Ohlsson (Lund) for their comments on earlier drafts. A first draft was presented to the symposium ‘Time, Space and Man’, arranged by the Demographic Data Base in Umeå in 1977. Data presented here are mostly taken from local history research on Degcrfors, which will be published in Deger/ors sockens hi.rtoria (preliminary title, forthcoming, 1980). View all notes They concern the question of how historical processes which can be observed at a general level, e. g. in the national economy, can be identified and analyzed at the local level. Keywords
