PHENYLRODPANOLAMINE HYDROCHLORIDE

Abstract
The object of the investigation was to determine the influence of phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride on blood pressure in the presence of a spinal anesthetic, novocaine, or pontocaine. The optimal effective dose of phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride was 50 mg. administered intramusc. In a series of 280 operative cases in which the drug was used after the admn. of a spinal anesthetic, phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride compared favorably with the vasopressor action of epine-phrine, ephedrine and neosynephrine. It offered advantages over the latter vasopressors in that the action was more prolonged without the sharp rise or fall in blood pressure noted following admn. of epinephrine; a more prolonged action was obtained over that of neosynephrine and less frequent excitation than when ephedrine was used.
