Abstract
The energy of interaction between a neutral atom or molecule with a dielectric surface is calculated; radiative corrections are included. The interaction energy is expressed in terms of the frequency dependent polarizability of the atom and the dielectric permeability of the surface. Approximate expressions for the energy of interaction with metals are developed and their numerical values are compared with those derived from experiment. Keywords
