Abstract
A definite relationship of ovarian cortical stromal hyperplasia to endometriai carcinoma and ovarian neoplasms was seen by others and confirmed by us. Stromal hyperplasia was found in 52.3% of 44 cases of endometriai carcinoma in women who have undergone the menopause and in 35% of a control group. In 43 cases of various ovarian neoplasms stromal hyperplasia was found in 69.7%, as compared with 36.2% of the controls. It is also possible that a relationship exists between stromal hyperplasia and mammary carcinoma and that the rate of growth of meta-static mammary cancer is influenced by hormonal output from hyper-plastic ovarian stromal tissue. Definite clinical improvement, even though temporary in some cases, was seen in the majority of patients with metastatic mammary cancer who had not yet undergone the menopause and in whom bilateral oophorectomy was performed. Detection of stromal hyperplasia in patients with metastatic mammary cancer may aid in predicting the duration of survival although our series does not bear this out as significantly as previous studies have suggested. Keywords
