Abstract
Observations are reported on a group of 45 patients with Parkinson's disease in whom lesions have been produced in the globus pallidus and thalamocapsular regions by stereotactic methods for the purpose of alleviating tremor and rigidity. These patients underwent 63 operative procedures with the successful completion of 58 such lesions. Twenty-four lesions were so treated with good results. Those which resulted in no significant improvement were largely in patients with faradvanced disease. While surgical lesions in the globus pallidus were successful at times in eliminating rigidity, they did not abolish tremor. Lesions in the region of the ventrolateral thalamus and posterior internal capsule were most effective in controlling both symptoms. Keywords
