Abstract
The identity of Italy's urban servants in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries is explored, focusing especially on the city of Rome. Of particular interest is the transformation of urban service in the eighteenth century from a primarily male occupation to one in which women were more prominent. The immigrant streams that fed the urban servant population are examined, and the place of service in the individual's life course is discussed. Keywords
