Abstract
A complete solution (initiation to completion) is developed for the spatially homogeneous model of a thermal explosion with heat loss. The temperature, time history and the concomitant reactant consumption are described in detail. A matched asymptotic expansion procedure is developed to describe the solution in six successive time zones. Each of these is characterized by distinct physical processes and their duration, which varies widely. Of particular interest are the extremely rapid processes which characterize a truly explosive event.
