INFLUENCE OF WEAK ELECTRIC CURRENTS UPON THE GROWTH OF THE COLEOPTILE

Abstract
A current of electricity passing from the base of the coleoptile to its apex accelerates growth; a current passing in the opposite direction decreases growth. These observations are not interpreted as supporting the cataphoretic transport theory of hormone distribution. The authors believe that electric currents influence growth hormone translocation not directly as an electrolyte, but through effects upon the complex protoplasmic system through which the hormone travels.
