Mucosal Lesions and Malabsorption in Celiac Sprue

Abstract
In sprue patients, the mucosal biopsy specimen from the first jejunal loop shows morphological lesions of varying severity. Also, the degree of malabsorption may differ markedly from patient to patient. A comparison of absorption assays with morphometric data on the proximal jejunal biopsy specimen yields no distinct correlations. We conclude that the severity of the morphological lesions in the first jejunal loop provides no information on the severity and extent of lesions in more distal loops of the small intestine.
