Abstract
Routine examination of 525 healthy young adults revealed systolic murmurs in 179 (34%). They were present in 44% of the women and 30% of the men. 53 were grade I in loudness, 105 were grade II, and 21 in grade III. Murmurs at the base were 60% of all heard and those at the apex alone, and at the base and apex numbered 20% each. The murmurs frequently varied in audibility. On no occasion did the mass radiography reveal evidence of heart disease. Emphasis was placed on avoiding attaching undue significance to faint murmurs that are variable in occurrence and without other evidence of cardiac disease. Keywords
