Case Against Routine Use of Digitalis in Patients Undergoing Cardiac Surgery

Abstract
After balancing the high toxic potential of digitalis, particularly during the immediate postoperative period, against benefits suggested by experimental studies but unproved under clinical conditions, the authors reach the conclusion that at the present time neither the routine use of digitalis in open-heart surgery nor its prophylactic use in general is justified.
