Neonatal Trichomonas Vaginalis

Abstract
The presence of Trichomonas vaginalis organisms was surveyed in 984 newborns by direct examination of wet smears from the vestibulum vaginae and by both direct examination and culture method in 333. The incidence of T. vaginalis was 0.1% by the direct examination alone and 0.6% by direct and culture method. Case reports of three neonates with T. vaginalis are presented. The present survey and previously reported series suggest that neonatal infection with T. vaginalis can exist in three forms: latent, mild, and virulent. Patients in two of the three cases reported in this article had concomitant monilial infection which resisted therapy until the trichomonads were eliminated.
