Abstract
A new action is presented for a recently proposed reformulation of general relativity. It involves only a GL(3) Yang-Mills connection and a fibre metric, plus some Lagrange multiplier fields; the spacetime metric can be reconstructed from these data on the constrained surface. The Hamiltonian analysis naturally leads to a new set of variables for the theory which, in a special gauge, reduces to the ones introduced by Ashtekar (1987).Keywords
