Abstract
The spotted alfalfa aphid, Therioaphis maculata (Buck-ton), and Old World species, increased tremendously in abundance and spread rapidly over the southwestern United States following its discovery in New Mexico in 1954. Foreign exploration for parasites of the aphid was initiated as a joint effort by the U. S. D. A. and the Univ. of Calif. in the late spring of 1955. As a result, 3 hymenopterous parasites, Praon palitans Muesebeck, Trioxys utilis Muesbeck, and Aphelinus semiflavus Howard, were obtained and are now being propagated in in-sectaries in California. The current paper reports the distribution and abundance of T. maculata and the distribution and importance of the 3 parasite species in 11 countries in the eastern Mediterranean region, Middle East, and East Africa, based on observations made during an 11-months'' assignment to these areas.
