THE HIDDEN SCRIPT

Abstract
Mathematics students commonly voice “trigger” questions or complaints such as, “I didn't know what you wanted”, that may provoke a reaction in teachers. These questions are usually imprecise expressions of confusion and frustration from the student. But there is a way of thinking about answers to these questions, which engages with the “hidden script” behind the questions, opens dialogue with students, and provides a rare chance for interaction with a student on the crucial issue of what is at stake in learning mathematics.
