Abstract
The author discusses the literature on North American experiences in diphtheria immunization with toxoid and toxin-antitoxin. He believes that the experiences cited indicate the following advantages of toxoid over toxin-antitoxin mixture for use in diphtheria immunization: It is 20-30% more effective, even when only 2 doses are given; it contains no serum or other animal protein likely to sensitize to a later therapeutic serum injection; it is without local or general reaction in practically all children under 7 yrs., and reactions in older children and adults are only unpleasant, not dangerous; it contains no free toxin; and it is more stable, retaining its effectiveness for a longer period, and is not affected by freezing. This publication has 2 references indexed in Scilit:
