Level and Variability of Serial Resting Blood Pressures in Subjects With and Without Ischemic Heart Disease

Abstract
Some 7, 000 resting blood pressures were recorded automatically in a soundproof room at intervals of 6-8 wk. in 50 patients with ischemic heart disease and in 40 matched controls. Average levels and ranges of systolic and diastolic pressure were higher in the patient groups 50 years of age and over. Female controls and patients under age 50 had lower blood pressure levels than males but over age 50, females averaged higher levels. It was concluded that the resting behavior of the vascular system, as reflected by level and variability of blood pressure, was different for the majority of the patients in this study compared to their controls.
