Sexuality in the Fungus, Glomerella

Abstract
Perithecia are formed at the line of contact between various sexual types of G. cingulata when grown on 2% corn meal agar (Difco). The number of perithecia formed under standard conditions was used as a measure of the relative fertility of the cross between any 2 strains and was found to be dependent upon complementary genetic factors. The crossing reaction between 2 weakly-crossing strains was markedly increased when such strains were grown adjacent to, but separated by a cellophane membrane from, a strongly-crossing strain. This observation suggests the elaboration by Glomerella of diffusible substances which stimulate sexual crossing.
