Abstract
The empirical description of turbulent wall layers across which the shear stress varies is considered. The description given by Townsend for zero-stress layers is found to be inapplicable to uniform pressure flows in pipes and two-dimensional channels, and to a boundary layer developing in the absence of a pressure gradient. Keywords
