Relative Thermal Stabilities by Pyrolysis Gas Chromatography--Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary Toluenesulfonamides

Abstract
A unique procedure for rapidly determining relative thermal stabilities of substituted toluenesulfonamides has been developed. The order of increasing thermal stabilities was established from (1) the relative amounts of low boiling and high boiling peak areas obtained by pyrolyzing a series of toluenesulfonamides at the same temperature and (2) the relative amount of thermal decomposition at different temperatures. The thermal stabilities were found to be primary > secondary > tertiary. This procedure may have general applicability to other thermally sensitive classes of compounds.
