Abstract
A report is given of derivations of useful formulas for the electrostriction and the nonlinear polarization of a gas of neutral molecules in a static electric field. The derivations begin with the definitions from quantum statistical mechanics for the grand‐ensemble averages of the two quantities in question, and the resulting formulas are obtained by means of the linked‐diagram method of Kaufman and Watson.Keywords
