Abstract
This report highlights several research areas in operations research likely to produce significant results over the next decade. It is the result of a workshop held between May 31 and June 2, 1987, and sponsored by the Systems Theory and Operations Research (STOR) Program of the Electrical, Communications, and Systems Engineering Division of the National Science Foundation; 24 operations research professionals participated, representing 15 U.S. universities, 1 foreign university, and 3 U.S. companies. After summarizing some significant OR accomplishments, the report sketches some important opportunities in the fields of optimization, stochastic processes, the operations research/artificial intelligence interface, operational and modeling science, and manufacturing and logistics.
