Abstract
As a student, staff nurse and sister, I was aware of a special group of nurses. One of these, the sister in charge of the diabetic ward, had all the characteristics necessary to gain membership to this elite band — she was able to transfer to me the skills that she performed with such ease but that appeared so difficult to the newcomer, without ever making me feel ignorant or useless. Through her teaching, I mastered insulin calculations and learned to ‘special’ hyperglycaemic patients. I discovered an enthusiasm for diabetes which I still retain 20 years later — only now I am the teacher. What is it that makes these nurses different? How can these differences contribute to nursing? How can we learn from them?
