Abstract
Ewes lambing in different months of two different years (breeding during anestrus induced by progesterone-PMS treatment) were assigned to four different groups: All the ewes were kept with vasectomized rams until the time of estrus (Groups 1 and 3) or killing (Groups 2 and 4) from the day of parturition. Ewes were observed for length of postpartum anestrus and for pituitary, ovarian and uterine characteristics. The length of postpartum anestrus was shorter (P<.05) in ewes suckled for only 1 day, as against ewes suckled for 42 days. Irrespective of the season and the year, FSH concentration in the pituitary glands of ewes suckled for only 1 day was higher (P<.01) than in ewes suckled for 21 days. The concentrations of LH did not differ significantly with either season or suckling. The largest follicles on the ovaries of non-suckled ewes were larger (P<.01) than those on ovaries of suckled ewes in all seasons. No effect of suckling on uterine involution was noted at 21 days postpartum. Copyright © 1971. American Society of Animal Science . Copyright 1971 by American Society of Animal Science. Keywords
