The Development of Community Health Services

Abstract
Today 2274 of the country''s 3067 counties are served by 1435 full-time health organizations. Counties without full-time health services are usually sparsely populated, median age is high, a high proportion of the population is in agricultural employment and a high family income and educational level are maintained. Staffing and financing are more accurate indices of the strength of the health services than measurement of geographic coverage. New patterns of community health services are needed, and can be met by these methods: prevention and case of long-term illness; financing medical care; mental and dental health programs; accident prevention; control of water and air pollution, and radiation protection. Examples of community health services for sparsely populated areas in different parts of the country are given.
