Abstract
A study of the effect of different irrigation regimes on the keeping quality in storage of apples (Malus sylvestris cv. Calville de St. Sauveur), showed that a ‘dry’ irrigation regime, consisting of a limited water supply (600 mm) and only four irrigations, was superior to ‘wet’ treatments with a more abundant water supply (800–1200 mm) and more frequent irrigations (10–22). However, the impaired tree growth and the small-sized fruit obtained with the ‘dry’ irrigation regime rule out its commercial use. It is suggested that the inferior keeping quality in storage of fruit subject to the ‘wet’ regimes could be due to a mineral imbalance in the fruit and to the high yield of very large fruit. Keywords
