Abstract
A brief description is given of a machine which can support the circulation and respiration of dogs for hrs. while the functions of the organic heart and lungs are suspended. To apply the apparatus it is necessary merely to catheterize one jugular and one femoral vein and to cannulate the 2 femoral arteries. To restore organic cardiopulmonary function it is needed only to stop the machine. Expts. are described in which animals were exsanguinated and revived, were rendered apneic by clamping the trachea, or by ventilating the blood in the oxygenator with pure O2 instead of the usual O2-CO2 mixture. Expts. are also described in which the left auricle was widely opened. Animals in which each of these procedures had been carried through recovered and lived for months. Keywords
