Abstract
An instrument to record accurately the crushing strength of a single granule has been constructed and tested. The range of crushing strength that can be measured simply depends on the choice of the size of a beam, the deflection of which produces a signal from a differential transformer. It has been demonstrated that extremely low crushing strengths (less than 200 g) can be accurately determined together with the axial deformation of the granule as the load is applied. The loading mechanism allows the crushing force to be applied at a variable and reproducible rate.
