Abstract
Technological capability may be the most important of all the forces which mould the present from a myriad of possibilities. Economic and demographic trends and discontinuities play a major role in determining which alternative futures become most probable, and the choice of one political philosophy over another is a crucial decisionpoint. On a deeper level, cultural beliefs and the knowledge, skills, and values instilled by formal education shape societies in powerful ways.Keywords
