A Malignant Eccrine Poroma Responds to Isotretinoin (13-cis- Retinoic Acid)

Abstract
The malignant eccrine poroma is a rare neoplasm originating in the sweat glands. Mehregan and associates (1) reported 35 cases among 450 000 consecutive biopsy specimens received over a 20-year period. This neoplasm can be mistaken for squamous cell carcinoma with acantholysis, Paget's disease, superficial spreading melanoma, and metastatic carcinoma. The histopathologic features of this disease (2) include epidermal origin, dermal and lymphatic spread, and chronic course. In the following case, a patient with eccrine poroma responded to isotretinoin (13-cis-retinoic acid) and not to conventional surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.
