Abstract
An expression for the zero-field magnetic susceptibility arising from electrons in a simple Bloch band is derived. Uncoupled field-dependent bands developed earlier are employed in the derivation. The expression thus obtained is amenable to very simple physical interpretation. Namely, it consists of three terms: the Landau-Peierls term, crystalline paramagnetism, and induced diamagnetism. Reduction of this result to parameters defined for field-free bands shows the equivalence of this result to those derived by earlier workers. Keywords
