Abstract
The uniaxial stress dependence of the (111) cross-sectional areas of the Fermi surface necks of copper, silver and gold has been determined from oscillatory magnetostriction measurements. The effect of transverse constraints on the sample ends is considered, and is shown to lead to errors of several per cent in the values obtained for the stress dependence unless considerable care is taken in mounting the sample. Keywords
