Abstract
There has been a resurgence of interest during the last decade in the role that essential fatty acids and their metabolites play in a range of human diseases. Inflammatory disease of the skin has been one focus of this interest. This paper reviews the clinical evidence that dietary supplementation with n-6 essential fatty acids (of the linoleate series) influences the clinical manifestations of atopic eczema, and comes to the conclusion that gamma linolenic acid may be of benefit in this condition.
