Abstract
Chicks were exposed to an aerosol of either the 68th or 85th embryo passage of infectious bronchitis virus, strain 33, and challenged at irregular intervals for 6-8 months with the homologous strain in the 4th embryo passage. The chicks were partially resistant throughout the experiment, as evidenced by a low virus titer in the trachea and lung compared with that in the controls. The chicks had usually eliminated the challenge virus by 96 hr., whereas the controls still had fairly high virus titers. The resistance appears to be a type of tissue immunity, since serum antibody levels are low or negligible following exposure to high-embryo-passage virus.
