Abstract
We use an extension of the cloudy bag model to SU(3)×SU(3) to calculate the radiative decay of the p atom. Our result differs from earlier work in a fundamental way because of the inclusion of coupling to the open Σπ channel. The branching ratio into γ is predicted to be of order 10–20 % bigger than that into Λγ, which should make it accessible to a current experiment.
