Abstract
The elastic constants c33 and c44 associated with longitudinal and transverse wave propagation along the [001] axis in MnF2 at 4.2°K have been measured as a function of the applied magnetic field H0 ∥ [001]. The results are in good agreement with linear magnetoelastic theory and yield a value for the magnetoelastic coupling constant of (5.4±0.5)×106 ergs/cm3. In the neighborhood of the spin‐flop transition the behavior of c33 is discussed in terms of a possible mechanism involving higher‐order processes arising from volume magnetostrictive coupling.
