Hemophilus AphrophilusEndocarditis

Abstract
There have been only three previous reported cases of this infection. These six cases are compared, and the similarity of this infection to Streptococcus viridans endocarditis is pointed out. The mouth or upper respiratory tract is the most likely portal of entry, and this organism appears to affect only previously damaged heart valves. Penicillin and streptomycin are recommended as the drugs of choice, the efficacy of this regimen being supported by clinical responses, tube-dilution antibiotic sensitivities, and serum bactericidal levels. Broad-spectrum bacteriostatic drugs, if used at all, should be used in addition to rather than in place of penicillin and streptomycin.
