Abstract
This paper attempts to synthesize the works carried out in the field of optimization in civil engineering structural design and is intended to help practising engineers and researchers. The paper is broadly classified according to the various types of structural systems and suitable grouping is done within this framework. Promising optimization methods, approximation concepts and structural design strategies are identified in the final part of the paper. The references are arranged in B chronological fashion. Keywords
